How often do we ask God for direction and get fed up because we don't get an answer? We grow weary of seeking and asking because we feel as if we're yielding no results. The fact is, maybe we are seeking emotion instead of listening to His voice? We're waiting for that "ah ha!" moment and trying to "feel out" His answer. God gave us feelings, they're humane and natural. But He doesn't ask us to go with our "gut feeling" or "follow your heart". In fact sometimes what He asks of us is uncomfortable and hard and the opposite of what we're asking for. He gives us answers that don't make sense. He gives us answers that we can't explain to anyone else except to say "He asked me to." As humans we demand explanation. We have a hard time reasoning why we should do things without all the facts. Facts and emotions are what the world tells us we need, but in God's reality, in our reality as believers, we only need His reason which He tells us is higher than ours.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.- Isaiah 5:8&9
I wonder how many times we chalk up a lack of response to a missing feeling? "Why do I need to change when there's no conflict?" "Why do I need to stay here when all I want to do is run away?" To us it just doesn't compute. It's like we think we can shake God like a magic 8 ball (remember those?) and try again to get a different answer. A dangerous thing occurs when we begin to try again, we start to follow our own desires and not His.This decision is not only hazardous to our walk with God, but to those around us. While we're wasting time shaking our magic 8 ball, we're missing out on the opportunities He has planned. God's will is not a feeling or a moment, it's a state of being. You are either in God's will or out of it.
There are times that God may birth something in your heart that needs to be built upon and done in His timing. It may be for a season or it may be your life's calling. The only thing causing confusion is our wrestling between what we want God to tell us, and what He is telling us. At this point we are not in full surrender even if we think it. We're like children holding a parent's hand and trying to drag them where we want to go instead where we need to go. We need to stop trying to drag God to our will, and allow Him to lead us to His.
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.
May your gracious Spirit lead me forward
on a firm footing.- Psalm 143:10
